The two July killings of Latino men across the country from each other has highlighted the sobering reality of an increasingly aggressive ICE presence in multiple U.S. states – and the chilling effect it’s had on both Latino families and Latino-owned businesses.

WASHINGTON, DC — In late July, four of the most influential Latino civic organizations in the country announced the 2026 Latino Civic Engagement Coalition — a landmark, nonpartisan partnership to educate and mobilize the fastest-growing segment of the American electorate from now through 2028. For the first time, UnidosUS, LULAC Institute, Inc., Mi Familia En Acción and Latino Victory Foundation will coordinate a unified strategy to reach millions of Latino voters, earlier than previous efforts.

The City of Kansas City in late July, approved $24.5 million for housing and neighborhood investment across Kansas City — $16.4 million from the City’s Housing Trust Fund for 16 housing projects and $8 million from the Central City Economic Development (CCED) sales tax fund for 10 projects in the city’s urban core. These projects will create 907 housing units. Of these, 746 will be affordable, making up over 80 percent of the total.
